How Billing Works

Alius uses Shopify Managed Pricing, which means:
  • You manage your subscription directly through Shopify — not inside the app.
  • Billing appears on your regular Shopify invoice.
  • No credit card is entered into Alius. Shopify handles all payment processing.

Upgrading to Pro

  1. Open Alius and go to the Home page.
  2. In the Current Plan section, click “Manage Plan”.
  3. You’ll be taken to Shopify’s pricing page for Alius.
  4. Select the Pro plan and confirm.
  5. Your Pro plan is active immediately upon approval.
You can also reach the pricing page from the Triggers page — if you’ve hit the trigger limit, a banner will show an “Upgrade to Pro” button.

Downgrading to Free

  1. Click “Manage Plan” on the Home page.
  2. On Shopify’s pricing page, switch to the Free plan.
  3. Shopify defers the downgrade until the end of your current billing cycle.
During the remaining Pro period: You keep full Pro access — all your triggers remain active. After the billing cycle ends: Shopify sends a webhook, and Alius:
  • Switches your plan to Free.
  • Keeps your oldest trigger active.
  • Disables all other triggers automatically.
Disabled triggers are not deleted — you can re-enable them if you upgrade again.

Pending Downgrade Notice

If you’ve requested a downgrade but still have Pro days remaining, the Home page shows a warning banner:
⚠️ Your Pro plan has been cancelled and will switch to the Free plan on [date]. Until then, you retain full Pro access.

Trigger Limit Enforcement

Trigger limits are enforced at three levels for maximum reliability:
LayerWhat Happens
UIThe “Create Trigger” button is disabled and a warning banner is shown.
Route ActionThe server rejects the form submission with an error message.
Service LayerThe createTrigger() function throws an error if the limit is exceeded.
This means even if a user somehow bypasses the UI, the server still prevents creating triggers beyond the plan limit.

Frequently Asked Questions

No. Your triggers are never deleted during a downgrade. They are set to “disabled” status. If you upgrade back to Pro, you can re-enable them.
The oldest trigger (by creation date) remains active. All others are disabled.
Yes. After the downgrade takes effect, you can disable the active trigger and enable a different one — as long as only 1 trigger is active at a time.
Plan terms and trial periods (if any) are managed by Shopify on their pricing page. Check the Shopify pricing page for current offers.
Your subscription state is synced from Shopify on every visit to the Home page. If you had an active Pro subscription, it will be restored.
Alius uses Shopify Managed Pricing, which is Shopify’s recommended approach for app billing. This means Shopify handles plan selection, payment processing, and invoicing — providing a secure, familiar experience.
